You may have heard that strength training is regarded by sports scientists as being even more effective than cardio training for improving your fitness and losing weight. Indeed, it is a complete myth that strength training is just for muscle building. Fortunately, you do not need to spend thousands of dollars on gym equipment to do strength training properly. Kettlebell exercises are good replacements for dumbbell and barbell exercises, and you can do them at just a fraction of the cost.
The kettlebell is a ball-shaped object with an attached handle. The ball is heavy, and you get kettlebells of various weights to suit your current fitness level. Kettlebell workouts involve doing various exercises in which you lift your kettlebell repetitively. Kettlebell routines can be fun and if you do the right exercises, they can be very effective for improving your fitness levels, increasing your strength, and burning fat.
The best kettlebell exercises are ones in which you engage your major muscles groups in compound movements. In layman’s terms, that means doing exercises that require you to move several joints at the same time in order to lift the kettlebell. A good example is the kettlebell squat. This, along with many other kettlebell exercises, is best done with two kettlebells, one for each arm. The squat is done by holding each kettlebell up to your shoulders. Then, squat down so that your thighs are parallel to the ground. Then stand up, and repeat.
You can also do weightlifter-type exercises, such as cleans. A clean is when you pick your kettlebells off the ground and raise them up to your shoulders in a single movement. You should ensure that you keep your back straight when you do this.
Any exercise you can do with dumbbells or barbells can be turned into a kettlebell exercise. This includes rows, presses, curls and dead-lifts. When you buy a kettlebell, you will usually get a little booklet that describes all the different exercises you can do. These booklets often have illustrations so you do not get confused about their descriptions.
If you really want to get fit and lose weight with kettlebell exercises, make sure you are working out at least three times per week. You do not have to do excessively long sessions. If you do a very intense workout, 20 to 30 minutes is plenty. You will see rapid changes with that type of routine. If your workouts are less intense, you will need to spend more time working out to see the same results.
