Let’s face it. Gyms are expensive. OK, sure, you join up for a small fee, then you have monthly or fortnightly fees to pay, and the fees are manageable. However, have you ever thought about how much these fees cost you over the years? If you have a typical $80 per month gym membership, then you are paying about $1000 per year, or $20,000 over two decades. When you consider the fact that you can get good home gym equipment for $2000 or less, and this equipment should last you for twenty years, you see that paying those monthly gym fees is just not worth it in the long run. This is why so many people are now investing in home gym machines.
There are a lot of different home gym machines on the market, and finding the right one can take a bit of work. Some machines have fancy bells and whistles, such as inbuilt television sets. However, if you just want a good bodybuilding workout, then you can get away with some basic home gym equipment such as an adjustable bench press and a squat rack. This equipment, along with a weight set and a good diet, is all you need to build muscle and get ripped.
However, some people are not comfortable with using a bench press or a squat rack without a spotter there for support. And if you are working out at home, then it is often difficult to find someone be your spotter. If you are in this position, you may want to consider investing in a smith machine home gym.
Smith machines restrict the motion of the bar along a vertical axis. They also come with a set of safety catches so, if you get stuck, you can fix the bar to one of these safety catches, thus relieving you from the danger of being crushed by the weight on top of you. In other words, smith machines are little bit safer than typical bench presses and squat racks. However, if you are not concerned about the safety issue, then getting the traditional equipment is a good choice because it will be somewhat cheaper than smith equipment.
Aside from the home bodybuilding equipment already mentioned, there is a wide array of different machines you can buy. Any equipment you would see in a gym can be purchased for personal use. However, it is well known that many exercise machines are not very effective for bodybuilding. For example, the leg extension is meant to help you get bigger quadriceps. But you will be much better off just spending your time and energy doing heavy squats. Personally, we recommend just sticking to equipment that allows you do to all the big compound movements, as these movements will yield the biggest gains in muscle.
