In some ways, gyms are great. They provide all of the equipment for you. They even have personal trainers on hand if you need one. However, for some people, gyms are not as convenient as they may seem. On the one hand, you need to pay monthly membership fees. These fees can often add up to around $1000 each year. Thus, over decades, you could end up paying tens of thousands of dollars on gym membership. And personal trainers are not exactly “cheap” either. On the other hand, gyms are not always convenient to get too. Most people go to gyms after work, so you have to compete with the peak hour traffic to get there. And then, once you are in, the gyms are so busy that you often have to wait for up to half an hour for the equipment that you wanted to use.

If you have ever been a member of a gym, you would know exactly what I am talking about. Many people end up quiting their gyms and then they buy cheap exercise equipment that they can use at home. You can spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on fancy equipment for a home gym, but if you want to keep costs down, you can get a pretty decent set-up for a reasonable price.

For example, used exercise equipment is always available in classified advertisements. Used equipment is often very cheap and very high quality at the same time. Generally, old weights equipment like benches, barbells and dumbbells are great to buy second hand. That kind of equipment lasts for decades. On the other hand, be wary of buying old weights machines that involve pulley systems, as these are often of low quality and they can break easily.

You can also get some high quality cardio equipment very cheaply through classifieds. Many people will buy a $2000 electric treadmill, then after a few months they will decide they do not really want it. You can often talk these people down to much less than $1000 for these items because they are so keen to get rid of them.

Cheap fitness equipment is also often available at fitness warehouses or online, but in some cases you get what you pay for. Avoid overly cheap treadmills and other cheap cardio equipment, as these will not withstand heavy treatment. However cheap weights equipment is good to buy online, but as mentioned before, beware of some of the pulley systems, because the more affordable ones are not as reliable. However, even if you have to update your equipment every five years, you will still be saving money that you would have spent on a gym membership.
