Six Tactics for Cross Country Racing

Cross country running provides plenty of challenges, and plenty of opportunities for using tactical maneuvers. Because of the course twists and turns, the valleys and hills, the changing terrain, and the ever-changing weather, everyone there has to consider many different factors at the start of every race. Here are several examples of effective tactics for running a cross country race:

Check the whole course before the race. Ideally, each competitor should jog the course the day before the race. This avoids over-exertion during the race warm up. Each course has its own dangers and it’s own opportunities to learn about.

Choose the right shoes. Decide whether you need racing flats or spikes, and select the right ones. The right cross country running shoes can give you a tactical advantage if the course conditions are slippery or muddy.

Getting a good position from the start. Of course maybe wide enough to maneuver at the beginning of the race, but it can soon turn into a series of narrow twisting trails. You must run the first 400 m fast enough to find yourself in a good starting position, but not fast enough to incur oxygen debt.

Take advantage of opportunities. Always be on the lookout for signs of weakness from your opponents. Some runners might slow down at the top of the hill, or when running around a curve. Take every opportunity to make a quick, effective move.

Make your move when out of sight. It’s very unnerving to your opponents to turn a corner, only to find that you have made a sudden surge and advanced your position. You can use the element of surprise to get the advantage on your opponent.

Race against your opponents, not the clock. A cross country course is different from a road or track. Since the course conditions are constantly changing, running an even race pace might be a disadvantage, or even impossible.
